British Antarctic Territory
Stamp Issue Commemorating the
50th Anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty
Signed in Washington on 1 December 1959 by twelve nations that were active during the International Geophysical Year in 1957-58, membership has reached 46 (of which 28 are consultative parties with voting status).

Since 1961 members have met regularly, and continue to meet annually in order to discuss:
- Scientific cooperation
- Measures to protect the environment
- Operational issues
The objectives of the Antarctic Treaty are:
- Antarctica is used for peaceful purposes only (military operations are not permitted on the continent)
- Continued freedom for scientific investigation and research
- Promote international cooperation and transparency in science
- Prohibit nuclear tests and the disposal of nuclear waste
- Provide that any visits to the continent comply with the Treaty
- Sets aside disputes over territorial sovereignty
The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, signed 4 October 1991 is one of the Treaty members’ proudest achievements and commits to the ‘comprehensive protection of the Antarctic environment’ including the conservation of Antarctic fauna and flora.
