The Falkland Islands Philatelic Bureau was set up in 1978. Prior to this time, Post Office staff looked after the day to day running of philatelic needs. Petrels and Shearwaters
The oceans which surround the Falkland Islands are particularly rich in petrels and shearwaters (Procellaridae) which are among the most successful of all the world’s bird families. The word Procellaridae derives from the Latin word procella (violent wind) and idae (family). All 80 species in this family are adapted to fly in wind and tend to be more concentrated in the windier latitudes. This issue features the four largest Procellarids which are known to breed in the Islands.

THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN
10 July 1940 to 31 October 1940
Over 114 days, 2927 brave young airmen from no less than 14 Allied countries, (Churchill’s ‘Few’), took to the skies to defend Britain from Nazi tyranny; sadly 544 did not return. At the start of 2010, it is believed that there were only 90 of ‘the Few’ remaining.

The ss Great Britain was a revolutionary and influential ship. Designed by Brunel and launched in 1843 she was the world’s first ocean going propeller driven iron ship. Packed with new technologies she was considerably longer and faster than her rivals. However when she arrived in the shelter of Port Stanley, Falkland Islands on May 26th, 1886 she was a worn and battered ship. Damaged in a storm whilst trying to navigate around Cape Horn from east to west she would never sail again.

HMS Exeter
Five ships of the Royal Navy have been named after the city of Exeter in Devon. Two were built in the 20th Century and both were to play important roles in the history of the Falkland Islands.
